About the run

Runners of all abilities are invited to enter the Nissan Run For Japan 10K, a unique 10km run around the UK’s biggest car plant to raise money for the Red Cross Japan Tsunami Appeal.

Taking place on Sunday, May 29 at 10am, this GPS-measured 10k route will take in two laps on traffic-free roads around Nissan Sunderland Plant

Runners will gather from 8.30am to collect their race numbers. At 9.50am they will be directed through the plant gates to the start line outside the plant’s body shop, where a minute’s silence will be held before the run begins at 10am.

While many runs can claim to be scenic, not many take place around such a unique 750-acre industrial setting, on roads weaving around the factory and featuring sights including: Thousands of cars waiting for shipment from Nissan’s export compound; the new £200 million electric vehicle battery plant; ten wind turbines and Nissan’s parts logistics warehouse. It will also be the first run in the UK to feature the 100% electric Nissan LEAF as a pace car - with no exhaust fumes to trouble the runners.

All of the money raised from the run will go towards the Red Cross Japan Tsunami Appeal, and will add to the thousands raised by Nissan staff in the UK with support from family and friends, dealers, suppliers, customers and contacts.

Since the earthquake and tsunami of March 11 more than 13,000 people are known to have died and a further 13,000 remain unaccounted for. A massive relief effort continues to help the millions of people who have been affected by the disaster and Nissan has been channeling donations to the relief effort through the Red Cross.

The Nissan Run for Japan 10k costs £10 to enter for all runners, and Nissan will pass on 100% of the entry fee to the Red Cross appeal. Further donations can be made to the Red Cross Japan Tsunami Appeal via the special website  http://www.redcross.org.uk/japannissan
