A Double for Stephenson !
Ryan Stephenson successfully defended his title when racing to a convincing victory in the 2009 Wallsend Rising Sun MT Race on Sunday 19th April.
Heading a field of almost 150 runners in the FPL-sponsored race, Ryan lived up to his status as pre-race favourite. Now wearing the colours of Gateshead Harriers, Ryan held off a determined challenge from Lee Roe of Heaton, in second place, and Mark Fenwick, of the host club Wallsend, in third. His time was some twenty seconds slower than the 2008 winning time. Conditions were excellent for the competitors, with little wind and dry underfoot.
Ryan's win made him only the third runner to record a double success in the Wallsend-promoted event. The 10k Road Race that was a predecessor the MT event, was won twice by Elswick's Mike McLeod in 1992 and 1995 - and twice by Stewy Bell in 1997 and 2006.
Paul Merrison of Sunderland Harriers, now an M50, came home in fourth spot to claim the Veterans title, ahead of Elswick’s M40 Ken Stephenson. Paul - a former Wallsend Harrier - claimed the Veteran's title for the third time in the last five years for the club's combined Road Race/MT event.
The Womens title was claimed by veteran runner Ingrid Hope of Sunderland Harriers, with Donna Horne of Wallsend runner-up by a two-second margin. Morpeth’s Zoe Armstrong was third. At 48, Ingrid Hope is the oldest winner of the Women's title with this superb performance.
