Stephenson is like a Rocket !
Wallsend Harriers almost doubled the number of entries that they had in 2007 for their Rising Sun MT Race on Sunday 13th April, but an increase in volume saw no reduction in quality as Ryan Stephenson of North Shields Poly raced to a hugely impressive victory. His 25.50 for the accurately measured five-mile course was almost one minute quicker than the winner in 2007, although the course had been slightly modified.
At the front of the field within the first 300 metres, Stephenson was never headed and finished with over a minute to spare on runner-up James Buis of Heaton, with John Archer of Low Fell coming home in third place.
There were 223 finishers on the traffic-free course at the Rising Sun Country Park in Benton and, despite a congested start area, the runners were full of praise for the race sponsored by Wellstream PLC. The former colliery site in North Tyneside offered competitors two large laps using the re-surfaced waggonways and paths of the Country Park, and with dry, sunny weather, the conditions were almost perfect for the large field.
M45 Paul Merrison of Sunderland marked an impressive return from injury to pick up the prize for first veteran, coming home in seventh place overall and ahead of the first M40 Paul Leigh of Wallsend.
Chester le Street’s veteran Kathryn Waugh romped to a resounding victory in the Womens race, finishing 26th overall and over one minute ahead of runner-up Angela Hunter from the same club. With Kathryn picking up the senior prize, Mandy Herworth of Claremont RR was the first veteran finisher. These women were at the head of a large female presence in the race, with 69 female finishers.
All finishers received a free t-shirt and Wallsend were grateful to the Environment Agency for their kind support in this matter.
