We're on the Road - Again !!
Ged Lee writes….
As the pain fades from my legs, to be replaced with happy memories of mountain biking across Scotland, I have had opportunity to start to think about our next Wallsend Harriers adventure - ‘The annual Toby’.
The aim is to both put something back into our communities – by raising as much cash for our local charities as we can - whilst celebrating how lucky we are as a group of people to be fit, healthy and to share good fellowship.
So for 2010 we’re going to run from one side of the country and back (the “and back “ bit is just showing off).
Each runner must contribute/raise a minimum of £30 for charity. The charities are, as in previous years, Beacon Hill School in Wallsend and St Oswald’s Hospice. Sponsor forms are available and if demand dictates I will open an electronic email account for St Oswald’s Hospice.
The objective is work as a relay team and cross the country and return home, using the Sustrans ‘Hadrians Way’ cycle route. We’ll start on Friday morning 20th August and finish on Sunday 22nd.
To date we have had an excellent response from club members wanting to take part. This is possibly a refection of how fantastic a time we have had on previous trips. If you are thinking about joining us I would strongly recommend that you put your name down. This is not a race! So regardless of your ability, if you fancy a great weekend, get your name down on the list.
As in previous years, each runner will be asked to “Toby” twice each day. The length of the legs are approx 10k each depending upon the terrain. The golden rule been that you run to the pace of the slowest person and always in pairs.
At the end of your relay section, the mini bus will pick you up and drop the next set of runners off. We will provide a simple kit list nearer the time to help shape your thoughts on what you may need to bring with you.
We’ll stop in B&B’s or hostels on the two evenings, and a critical factor in deciding the location of the digs is the nearest pub. To that end, Gareth has been doing a lot of research to find the perfect location to ‘reinvigorate’ ourselves for the following day
If the last couple of trips are anything to go by, this will be a fantastic weekend that will leave you with a smile on your face for weeks after.
Cheers Ged
