It's the Young 'uns In Front !

The first of the two-mile handicap races in the Wallsend Harriers Summer Grand Prix saw a stunning one-two-three for a trio of young athletes in their debut appearances in this competition. Under-15 runner Keiran Drape held off the stern challenge from his fellow young athletes, sprinting impressively for the line to notch a five-second victory ahead of under-13 runner Adam Hill. Only a few seconds behind was the diminutive figure of under-11 runner Jack Armstrong, with all three runners coming home comfortably ahead of the chasing pack of senior and veteran runners.

Thirty-six runners went to the line for this second race in the series, as the April club Championships were the nominated first race. Conditions were bright and dry, but with a chilly north-easterly wind blowing in off the nearby coast. The course uses the two mile circuit around the Rising Sun Country Park.

Vicky Hindson continued her marvellous good form to smash the Womens club record by a massive twenty seconds - a time that was also the sixth fastest of all runners on the night. Ken McPherson was only nine seconds outside his own Veterans course record as he recorded the fastest time overall.

The result puts young Keiran at the head of the overall table after two of the seven races. Next race is Tuesday May 25th.
