The 'Open Race GP' 2010
The Blyth 10k race on Sunday 25th April marks the first race in the Wallsend Harriers 'Open Race GP' for the 2010 summer season.
Last year saw the first staging of this competition, the intent of which is to reward and encourage members to take part in events promoted by local clubs. In particular, the series offers a chance to compete in an in-club competition to those members unable to get along to the regular Tuesday evening club sessions - the nights that are traditionally used to stage the club's winter and summer Grand Prix races.
Last year seventy-one members took part in at least one of the designated races, and the series was won by Emma Moir by the narrowest of margins. Tony Maddocks and John Ross were the only two members to take part on every one of the series races.
2009 Top Ten
Emma Moir 355
Sean Kelly 354
Dave Hindmarch 352
John Ross 352
Paul Brown 347
Tony Maddocks 343
Laura Emmerson 341
David Rowe 340
Jo McCullough 333
Kerry Bentham 325
Perhaps the most distinctive feature of the series is the barely-comprehensible scoring system devised by Mick Skeldon and Bill Todd - rivalling the Harrier League Grand Prix scoring system in it's bizarre complexity. Mick Skeldon explains it thus:
" The best six scores out of eight will count.
- 50 points are awarded for taking part in a race.
- A predicted time and finishing position are allocated before each race based on previous performances.
- A point is awarded for every full 5 seconds a competitor beats their predicted time up to a maximum of one minute (max of twelve points).
- A point is awarded for every place a competitor beats their predicted finishing position up to a maximum of five points."
Nice and simple...
For the 2010 series there has been a slight modification to the designated eight scoring races.
25 April - Blyth 10k
19 May - North Shields Clive Cookson Races
9 June - Blaydon Race
23 June - Newburn River Run
7 July - Tynedale 'Pie & Peas' 10k
21 July - Sunderland 5k
3 Aug - Morpeth 10k
5 Sept - Tynedale 10 mile
For those members who have not pre-entered the Blyth race, the first in the series, entries are believed to be available on the day.
For details of races, times, etc, speak to any of the club captains.
