"Annual Toby" weekend 2010
This is the first call for names for this summer's Club charity running weekend, which will take place from Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd August. The route will be Hadrian's Wall, out and back from Segedunum to Bowness on Solway on the west coast, although we will plan a slightly different route in each direction so that organisers are not accused of a lack of imagination.
The format will be similar to last year's Coast and Castles relay, and the Coast to Coast in 2008. The total distance over the 3 days will be about 180 miles, and this will be split into stages of 5-6 miles, with 2-4 runners doing each stage before handing over the baton.
As usual we'll try to match people of similar abilities so no-one gets their legs pulled off, and it should be emphasised that this is not a race, there are no targets, other than to get to each night's accommodation in time for a hose down, bucket of chips and a whale end, washed down with a few pints/glass of wine/Blue WKD (T Carter)- although if that's his secret to running that fast, I'm off to Morrisons to buy 10 crates of the stuff.
Running ability is irrelant to participation in this event, and we want as many people to get involved, regardless of how fast you are. In past years, runners have generally done 2 stints each per day, but there is no pressure to do that much if you don't want to. On the other hand, some folks have done a bit more that 10-12 miles/day, and clocked up some astounding mileages over the weekend.
Transport will be provided, and accommodation with be bunkhouse/hostels- approx cost per night will probably be £12-15 for a dorm bed. Further details will be given at a later date, when we've had a chance to look at maps and got an idea of numbers interested. Details of the local charities to be supported will also be decided.
As ever, this is a great opportunity to get out for a run in some less familiar parts of our beautiful region- anyone who knows the middle section of the Hadrian's Wall walking trail will know how spectacular the countryside is. We'll also try to ensure that the route passes near to potential sources of "refreshment", not that drinking is big or clever of course.
