Vicky Leads the Way !

Vicky Hindson was the pick of the Wallsend runners in the North of England Cross-Country Championships held at Witton Park, Blackburn, on Saturday 23rd January. Vicky continued her fine run of form to finish 56th in the Senior Womens event, leading Wallsend to an impressive 13th place in the team competition - the club's best-ever result in this prestigious Championship.

The individual title was won by Hallamshire's Hattie Dean, who also led her club to the team prize.

Caroline Hasson adds this first-hand report….

Blackburn was memorable for me and will be remembered for the pain of struggling so hard to be fourth counter and losing out by less than a second!!! Kerry Bentham and I battled it our for the first three miles, before she took a good lead and it wasn’t until the last three-quarters of a mile that I started to catch her up again. I pulled level with her in the last 200 metres then ended up crossing the line in exactly the same time but missed out on the fourth team counter place. Gutted!! (note to self: 'Must Try Harder!!’)

A few thanks are in order for the day - to Terry, Donna, Kath Robertson, Mick Skeldon, Sog and Davey Anderson for coming along just to cheer us all on - even if it did mean frostbite for them all!! You really kept us going through the mud and horrific hills of the course. Thanks also to the drivers - Dave A and Micky Baker for getting us there and back safely. Thanks to Kerry for her cheese and ham sandwich and to Sean for his Port!! (apparently it was to "settle his stomach"!!! - best excuse I have ever heard!!) Of the two buses - ours was extremely quiet with half of us asleep on the way back - not much banter - if you ask me - we were obviously the ones who ran harder!!!!! You know what they say - if you have got anything left at the end of it then you haven't worked hard enough!!!
