The cross country fun starts a week on Saturday at Cramlington and doesn't stop until March 24 in Alnwick - that's five and a half months of joy for all of us at Wallsend Harriers.

So get your names in to club captains Vicky and Mick asap to get your race number - and keep it, as you'll need it for the whole Winter.

In the meantime, enjoy this offering from Wor Statto Stacey Rogers, with a run down on what's in store...

NEHL: What you need to know

It's muddy and there's a few hills thrown in - you really do need spikes for this stuff - and make 'em 14mm ones!

Blokes' races are anything from 5mile to 8+ depending on the course, the diversions that have had to be put in place due to the weather and the cruelty of the organisers. They tend to be run in laps - so the first one's a practice and the second one is less of a surprise and the third is tortuous, as you then know what's to come!

Lasses' races are usually 3-4 mile and tend to be 1 or 2 laps at the most.

Younger lads usually follow similar to the lasses or slightly less.

It's all based on 'handicaps' for adults which means you'll find yourself in one of 3 packs, 'slow', 'medium', 'fast' - nice names! And if you end up in the top XX (this will be announced later) then you get to move up and chase the other packs down! Joy!

The timetable

The races are on SATURDAYS and the day usually runs a bit like this:
  • 12.15 Combined Boys & Girls under 11 (if on)
  • 12.30 Boys under 13
  • 12.35 Girls under 13
  • 12.50 Boys under 15

  • 13.15 Senior Men
  • 14.00 Junior men under 17
  • 14.30 Senior Women & Under 17/20 Women
But don't quote us - these things tend to run to a schedule of their own based on the times of the people competing. Be there early, but bring plenty of gear in case there's a lot of standing about.

Come on Lads and Lasses! The cross country season is where we truly have to come together and compete for this great club of ours as a team and make sure we support each other.
The challenge this year is to topple some of the 'usual suspects' who regularly claim the clubs counting positions. With some new members and the fantastic progress everyone is making we can think of many who will be able to take up the challenge.
This weather we're currently having will obviously mean the first race at East Cramlington will be a stroll in the park.....
Ah yes, one last thing, there's also a small matter of an internal club Harrier League Grand Prix to compete for. See you on the start line!

To those colleagues who are not considering taking part in the XC's, for various reasons perhaps.
Honestly it's true, it's probably the most masochistic thing you can do as a runner; that is to strip down to just a vest and pair of shorts on a bitterly freezing cold day with the despairing thought of running up & down hills, through streams and quagmire mud. But as you go to the start line feeling like you are going to the gallows for execution, there is something that you experience that you seldom get in life, and that is huddling with your club colleagues and counterparts from other clubs , everyone is shivering and jumping up and down to keep warm, but smiling, shaking hands and wishing each other "have a good one" - if you never experience this feeling, then it will be a great loss to you, because the camaradarie born out of it is something to cherish, it's absolutely priceless, honest!!! Give it a go you've only got one life. See you all in the tent next week. Steve

I have to agree with all the above... My FIRST ever race was Prudhoe X country last year and if I could do that with out much training then anyone can do any of them. I will be doing my best to do as many of the races as I can this season and especially Prudhoe to see if I have improved on last year. It is a great day of team spirit, support and despite the freezing coldness and thoughts of I must be mad, it really is a great feeling to know you are part of such a super club and team. Come on Wallsend!!! x
