Winning Team! 4 x 100m
Martin Telford writes.....A solid turnout enabled the Wallsend/Blyth team to cement 2nd place. A position we held for most of the meeting. North Shields poly made a fist of hosting this the first match of the series of four and took a grip from the outset. Thanks to them as hosts and congratulations on talking the first meet.

Well what a fantastic start to the T&F season from the combined Wallsend/Blyth team securing 2nd place behind North Shields Poly at Churchill playing fields yesterday. With competitor numbers down due to racing clashes, holidays and broken bones team manager Martin had a job on his hands ensuring he had as many events covered as possible. But never wanting to let the side down and in usual Wallsend/Blyth team spirit the troops pulled together and turned their hand to any event they could in order to score some vital points. And what an eventful day it was with some outstanding races in particular the 800/1500m and the men’s 4 x 100m relays.

Track & Field Team Manager Martin Telford writes....
The first fixture in our 4 series track and field league is fast approaching.Saturday  May 5th at churchill playing fields in Whitley Bay. It`s time for me to gauge the amount of interest from members who would like to be involved in some way this year. By involvement I mean either compete, officiate or support. The team, (although track and field suggests specialist training) is made up of our club members who want to be part of a team and enjoy what is a good day out. No pressure just fun!

It is a full athletics timetable comprising all track and field events, of which we have `A` competitors and `B` competitors. We amalgamated with our team buddies at Blyth harriers in 2009 and our 3rd place finish last season see`s us staying in the same division 3E along with Morpeth. Joining us are 2 teams coming down a division and 2 teams coming up. Our friends at North Shields Poly and South Shields/Birtley along with Richmond and Zetland and Houghton A.C. make up the league.

I will be at the club as much as possible to answer any questions any  members may want to ask or you can drop me a mail at martytel02@yahoo.com

Our track & field coach Martin Telford writes.......Well done to a couple of Blyth athletes (our partners in crime in the Track & Field league!) who won medals at the indoor track and field champs at the weekend -they are both in my group and attend the sprint sessions we hold alongside SOG's group at the track on a Friday night. Many of you who took part in the Track & Field last season will recognise Dave Swallwell, pictured with his gold medal from the 60 metres (over 40's) in a PB of 7.93 and Bethan Sproat won silver in the u17 triple jump with 9.15 and bronze in the high jump, jumping the same height as the winner 1.50. Our very own sprinting legend, Wallsend Harriers Eric Smart was down to run but had a slight twinge and pulled out.

(Note from Ed: Thanks Martin for all the work you do with the track & field athletes. Not long till the T&F season starts folks...for more information click here!)

Go on - give it a go!

Gill Wetherill (Pictured left), ran an outstanding 100 metres. Despite a depleted squad due to holidays, the Wallsend and Blyth team put in some fine PB's to round off the competition!
